Overwhelmed and Don't Know Where to Start?

Overwhelmed and Don't Know Where to Start?
My motivation trick and advice to clients who are having a rough start at things is to set a timer for 30 minutes and dive in.

Let's use a bedroom as an example:

I start with making the bed. Then I pick up everything off the floor and put it all on the bed to process. I have a few garbage bags open and beside me--Donate, Trash, Recycle. I put "Keeps" in the room/area they belong in--books in the bookshelf, kids' toys in their room, bathroom stuff in the bathroom, etc. I put dirty clothes in the hamper, and hang up/fold and put away any clean ones. Just doing that makes the room feel totally transformed!

Already pretty organized and didn't have much to do, and still have time left? Dig into the nightstand drawer--keep using your Donate, Trash, Recycle bags and put things in the room/area they properly belong in if you're keeping them. When the timer dings, you're done! Pat yourself on the back. :-)

Repeat as often as you like, but do it at least once--few times a week to tackle overwhelming projects, tasks or areas.

At the end or start of each day, spend an additional 10-15 minutes picking everything up and putting it in its proper place on the areas you've already gotten semi-controlled. Doing routine maintenance makes sure things don't pile up on you again. It's like laundry and dishes--just something you have to routinely do.
